Painful improvement

We don’t as a rule like to share with learners that the path they take is likely to be painful, effortful, filled with errors, and likely to trigger self-doubt. But if all we do as driving instructors is tell our pupils how wonderful they are, then we are putting a direct limit on further growth because they can easily treat such feedback as the ‘end goal’; having reached the ceiling of improvement.

Learning is filled with nervousness, doubt and feelings of failure. And it is precisely the process that all of us go through as we feel these emotions that defines outcomes. How we react, respond to failure.

It occurs with us too as driving instructors. We are trying our best to facilitate growth in our pupils. Without doubt we will have times when a pupil seems to be flatlining, and we feel helpless. But, making use of a mentor is a great way of dealing with such times. Mentorship is what we adopt in the BIG TOM franchise. It takes courage to recognise that we need help. If our life is full of dreary sameness, where we are quite satisfied with our level of ability, then we are already in a decline.

Things move on at a great pace. Techniques and skills that would have worked 5 years ago, are not exactly redundant, but will almost certainly need refining. And the refinement is effortful – there is no other way of saying it! But it is where the growth and the reward is.

The BIG TOM franchise recognises that we constantly need to adapt and if you have a desire to improve as a driving instructor then you are in the right place. We like to innovate. It doesn’t win us friends, but we aren’t in business to collect friends, we are in business to create value for customers.
