Focus on the doing

The BIG TOM Driving School has been established since 2009. We have worked to help customers achieve their driving goals for a long time, and we have paid attention along the way. Nearly every single customer has had the goal of wanting to gain their full driver’s licence, you might say this desire is the key that unlocks their goal. But you would be wrong.

We have noticed that in fact, the desire should be to concentrate on all of the small things that a learner does – because if they adapt what they ‘do’, it will achieve the end goal. Far too many people focus on the goal, the licence, the driving test, when really, their attention should be on how they like to learn, their sleep levels, how they can improve concentration, getting better at spotting hazards, recognising the importance of self-awareness, finding time to practice.

And if you have been monitoring the blogs on this channel, you might have noticed a pattern. What works effectively for pupils learning to drive, also works for PDI’s learning to become a driving instructor. Typically, and it is no judgement of anyone, when PDI’s are going through the process of qualifying to become a driving instructor, they just want to know how to pass the tests – that is their sole goal. When in fact, there is so much more to be gained in paying attention to the ‘doing’.

Reading the body language of a learner driver.

Being able to monitor a pupil’s actions AND what is going on in the road.

Organising the day so that PDI practice is good quality practice.

Communicating without judgement.

Knowing when to be quiet.

And we know this is the case, through years of experience, it isn’t a hunch or something to just ‘have a go’ at – this change in attitude really will make a difference. The irony is that when people focus on tests, for many, the fact that they are creating so much internally generated pressure, will affect how well they learn. And that will potentially be detrimental to the outcomes. How counter-productive is that?

As a new franchisee, you will quickly notice that we pay attention to the ‘doing’ because by doing so, the outcomes will look after themselves. Every ounce of effort that we make in this franchise of the ‘doing’, has benefit to our customers. Doing the right things is habit forming, humans notice patterns, and it creates consistency. As such, we are systematically helping our customers by repeatedly doing the right things. And this is powerful. It affects outcomes.
