What it means to be competent

Any driving instructor who has been in their career a while, will agree that a dangerous combination is: supreme confidence + incompetence

This does not make for safe driving lessons.

And of course this is true in any business, including those who train driving instructors.

The question for any person who is considering joining the BIG TOM Franchise really is:

“But can you give me some reasons why I would join you?”

The large national driving schools would start giving statistics about how many instructors they currently have with them (*pssst* try asking them how many instructors on average, leave them every month).

But of course, statistics don’t stand for anything when you are facing losing your business or having your green badge withdrawn by the regulator. What you need is tried and tested skills and processes that create competence. It will be competence that provides your driving school business with regular income. And there is no shame in identifying areas of weakness where you can bolster your skills.

It is analogous to having a pupil come to you, you have never seen them before, they have been with 3 driving instructors and had 4 failed attempts at the driving test. And there they stand looking at you, pleading with you to help them.  It is this kind of scenario when you can test for competence.  That type of pupil will require a higher level of competence from the instructor to change outcomes – kind of obvious statement, because they have already used 3 previous instructors who couldn’t help them.

And it is the same with a driving school business that is not performing to the maximum. It takes a higher degree of competence to help that business owner.

The BIG TOM Franchise has no desire to have thousands of “average” instructors across the UK, we seek to provide high-quality driving training using competent instructors.

It might seem like a small point, but it really isn’t.
