Let’s take you on a journey into the future, a future that does not include being held up by traditional lifts in high-rise buildings.  

Imagine that you start to see in residential and commercial tower blocks an alternative to the lift. Upon closer inspection, there appears to be some key differences which you feel you need some time to reflect on.  

The key benefit is the saving of time. People are able to ascend and descend much quicker with this new system. You step on to a cable that has got a very neat safety device that prevents you from falling. You don’t need any particular strength to ‘hold on’ for your dear life, but yes, you do need to remain engaged. Any luggage or carrying devices beyond a certain size/weight are transported seperately, at the same rate of travel and tagged electronically to the person so that when the person disembarks, the luggage identifies itself to the owner. How clever. 

For those who want to make use of this, they can receive training in how to use this new system. In fact, the training is compulsory for those who wish to use it, and surprisingly painless, and, actually quite liberating. You start to wonder why nobody had thought of this previously. 

There is a very clever element to this that enables the user to decide at which point they wish to slow the rate of ascent/descent. It is smart because, even if the user fails to decide on this point, there is a fool-proof trigger that kicks in at a given moment and ensures the dismount is comfortable, safe and easy. So, this means the user does have options about the experience they choose to have, but even if they make no conscious choice, the system still ensures a positive experience. 

The safety record is no lower than the traditional lift, the efficiency in time saved is at least 4 times that of the lift. You might consider that not enough of a saving to bother yourself with a new regime such as this; but then again, you may have never lived or worked in a tower block before. 

As one can imagine, this is creating a bit of a stir. Imagine all the existing structures that will need to be adapted to keep up with this revolutionary idea. If they don’t, they will fall behind the times, and inevitably the consumers will vote with their feet. 

And the real ‘cherry on the top’ moment comes when you consider capacity. Lifts are by their very nature restricted on the amount of people it can accommodate at any given time, only one lift can utilise one shaft at any time, and naturally, there is a great deal of inefficiency simply by the fact that a certain percentage of occupants in any lift at any given moment will naturally delay the other occupants by wanting to disembark on different levels. 

This new system has got a potential capacity that exceeds a traditional lift by 18 times – it can transport more people, quicker – an advantage not lost on those who consider fire regulations. 

Let’s zoom back to the present now. Your imagination may consider the above far-fetched but, it is true that our use of time is important; we all seek efficiency and that inevitably means reviewing how time is organised for given outcomes.
