If you do any PDI training or even franchise induction training with me, we’ll have a laugh. Don’t get me wrong, you’re not paying me for some kind of alternative Comedy Store, but when you are learning things, you need to enjoy it so that you remember it, and when you have a laugh, you tend to enjoy it. So humour is good in a learning environment, it helps to make things ‘stick’.
And I’m good at role-play of pupils learning to drive. You want nervous? I can do nervous. Arrogant? Oh yes, say no more. You want confused? No great change for me on that one then, I seem to spend half of my waking hours in a state of confusion. You see, rather than forcing you to regurgitate a number of sentences and questions that examiners like to hear on tests, I’d rather see that you can effectively deal with a pupil that has particular needs. The value of your service is dealing with pupil’s needs.
I went to the doctors the other day, and the doctor (I think it was a doctor, they didn’t actually formally greet me), the doctor did not look at me once. If I had been going to a computer repair specialist I would have been impressed at the attention the computer received, but unfortunately, I was actually there for… me.
And you, you are interested in coming into a service industry, that primarily involves the cognitive development of pupils….their learning; so we better make sure you can interact professionally with people for starters, like, looking at them when you ask them questions. Properly listening to their answers. [What a novel approach to human interaction!]
But more than that, human behaviour is complex, and in a learning environment the behaviours vary which unsurprisingly, does have an impact on the learning outcomes. So your training with me is going to include how we can maximise learning with a broad range of pupils’ behaviours. Sound interesting? Sound fun? It is! I love my job, I love helping people to achieve their goals and I love the fact that I am intellectually stimulated in order to create that outcome. If anyone suggests to you that the most important part of being a driving instructor is to be patient – they really haven’t a clue about the art of teaching.
